When it comes to professional car window tinting, experience matters. With so many choices available

today from DIY kits to professional installs, understanding what really makes a

quality tint job can be confusing.

We sat down with our in-house 10-year veteran of the auto window tinting industry,

Donald Phantha, to get expert insights into the craft, the technology, and what

customers should look for when choosing a tint shop.

Don is on the right with his window tinting training certification.

1. How did you get started in the window tinting industry?

I started working part-time at a local detailing shop during college and immediately got

hooked. After some time of training under a master installer and attending industry

expos, I wanted to get up and going on my own.

2. What are the biggest misconceptions about window tinting?

Many people think tinting is just for looks. In reality, good window tint protects against

UV damage, reduces interior fading, keeps the car cooler, and even adds a layer of

security. Also, not all tint films are the same—quality makes a big difference.

3. How do you help customers choose the right type of tint?

It starts with asking the customer what matters most: heat rejection, privacy, style, or

a mix. Based on their priorities, I recommend different films like ceramic, carbon, or

dyed options and explain their warranties and benefits.

4. What sets your tinting process apart?

We never rush a job. We take time to properly clean, prep, and install. We only use

premium materials backed by strong warranties. Every car is treated like it’s my own,

ensuring precision and long-term satisfaction.

5. How has window tint technology evolved recently?

Ceramic films are the big game-changer, they offer amazing heat rejection without

needing to be dark, and they don't interfere with cell phone or GPS signals like older

metallic tints sometimes did.

6. What are the key benefits of professional tint beyond appearance?

Professional tinting dramatically reduces cabin heat, blocks 99% of harmful UV rays,

preserves your interior, protects your skin, and even makes glass harder to shatter—boosting security.

7. What’s the typical customer journey from start to finish?

After an initial consultation to select the right film, we fully inspect and clean the vehicle.

We use computer-cut patterns where possible or hand-cut carefully if needed. Most

installations are completed in 2–4 hours, followed by care instructions to maximize the

film’s life.

8. Any advice for someone considering a DIY tint kit?

DIY kits can be tempting, but tinting is a skill that takes years to master. Common

mistakes include bubbles, gaps, and poor alignment. Professional installation not only

looks better but often includes warranties—saving you time, money, and frustration.

9. Are there any legal requirements customers should know about?

Yes, every state has specific regulations. For example, in Minnesota, front side

windows must allow at least 50% of light in. We always review the local laws with

customers to ensure their tint is 100% street-legal.

10. What's your favorite part about being in the window tinting industry?

Seeing a customer's excitement after the install never gets old. I love knowing that I’m

protecting their vehicle, improving their comfort, and making them safer while also

delivering a beautiful finish. Tinting is both an art and a science, and that’s why I’m

passionate about it.

11. What is up-and-coming at Tint Envy?

We will be taking our tinting services on the road with mobile tinting; we come to you!

We have 6+ years of mobile detailing with Steamology Detailing and want to get that

same momentum with Tint Envy. We understand the importance of people’s time and

having their car at a shop for 2-4 hours, while either waiting or lining up a ride. We are

looking to launch that later this summer (2025).

But like our car detailing, we will continue tinting services at our shop location in Delano,

MN:
